The hand mortar is a firearm that was used in the late 17th and 18th century to throw fused grenades. After priming the firearm and adding the gunpowder, the shooter would light a grenade fuse, place the grenade in the muzzle of the mortar, then fire it at the enemy. However, accidents could occur if the weapon misfired and the lit grenade remained in the barrel. The reason people eventually stopped using this weapon…

4. R.J. Braverman Stinger Pen Pistol

By the 1920s, the first pen guns were built. Modelled after a fountain pen, they were capable of firing a single handgun round. The Braverman Stinger was mechanically incapable of firing while in its ‘I’m a pen’ mode, the firearm had to be transformed into a pistol by pulling and pivoting the cylinder on a hinged joint. This gave the gun a readily identified barrel and grip. A small trigger without a guard popped out when the gun was in ‘Destruction’ mode. To fire, you simply pointed the muzzle end in the general direction of your target and pushed upward on the trigger to fire.

3. Active Denial System

The Active Denial System (ADS) is a non-lethal, directed-energy weapon developed by the U.S. military, designed for crowd control. Informally, the weapon is also called the heat ray since it works by heating the surface of targets, such as the skin of targeted human subjects. According to a military spokesman subjected to the weapon: “For the first millisecond, it just felt like my skin was warming up. Then it got warmer and warmer and I felt like it was on fire…. As soon I was away from that beam, my skin returned to normal and there was no pain.”

A Duck’s Foot Gun was a distinctive type of volley gun that was manufactured during the 19th and 20th century. A volley gun is a gun with several barrels for firing a number of shots, either simultaneously or in sequence. They differ from modern machine guns in that they lack automatic loading and automatic firing and are limited by the number of barrels bundled together.

The personnel halting and stimulation response rifle (PHASR) is a prototype non-lethal laser dazzler developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. Its purpose is to temporarily disorient and blind a target. Another added effect is that the two lasers, which operate at different wavelengths, also disorientate people if they look into the light, meaning that they lose almost all combat effectiveness.
